Colin Cooke

Colin Cooke

Interdepartmental Postdoctoral Associate

2010  PhD  University of Alberta

An interdisciplinary scientist interested in natural and anthropogenic environmental change.  To date his research has been cenetered around four broad topic:

Geoarchaeology and paleoclimatology of the Andes

Arctic and Alpine environmental change

Geochronology, including radiocarbon (14C) dating and tephrochronology

The role of peatlands in the global carbon cycle

2010  PhD  University of Washington, Seattle

Primary Research:

Mountain Precipitation: Patterns, Processes, and Impacts

Currently the main focus of  my research is the investigation of precipitation over mountainous terrain. Aspects of mountain precipitation I am particularly interested in:

  • its climatology
  • how the rain-snow transition is determined
  • how its intensity and distribution is controlled by dynamics, thermodynamics, and microphysics
  • how it is affected by climate variability and change
  • its role in triggering landslides and surface erosion
  • its role in the mass balance of glaciers
  • its role in regional hydrology and water resources
  • its predictability

Research Interests:

Frost heave in freezing soils

Drying of colloidal materials

Sea ice growth

Evaporation of salty solutions

Jill VanTongerenJill VanTongeren

Bateman Postdoctoral Associate

PhD  2011 Columbia University

My research has focused primarily on the Upper Zone of the Bushveld Complex of South Africa.  The Bushveld Complex is the world’s largest layered mafic intrusion and is one of the world’s largest sources of precious metals.  The Upper Zone is thought to represent the final pulse of magma into the Bushveld, and is ideal for investigating the effects of heat loss and extreme differentiation of large magma bodies.

Guangsheng Zhuang

Bateman Postdoctoral Associate

PhD  2010  University of California, Santa Cruz

Research Interests: I am interested in Cenozoic tectonics and climate change in Northern Tibetan Plateau. I am using an integrated approach, including the basin analysis, low-temperature thermochronology ((U-Th)/He and fission track analysis), and stable isotope analysis, to understand the coupling between mountain-building and climate change in the Northern Tibetan Plateau.
